Moving software, documents, users and settings from your old computer to your new Windows 7 computer is similar to my upgrade service. The difference being that there are no significant changes made to your old machine. There are some other considerations mentioned below.

How it Works:

Simple! Just Click Here and either email or call me. You will then receive instructions on ordering my service, which only costs $95.Give yourself a NEW Beginning!

If you don't already own an external hard drive (which is recommended to backup your Windows 7 computer before the transfer), I can purchase it for you at a very reasonable cost! Or, if your old machine has enough disk space, I can backup your new machine to your old machine.

You will then receive an email and phone call and either bring your desktop CPUs (I don't need your monitors, keyboards, mice, etc., just the computers) or your laptops (or combination of the two) over to me. If you would rather I send someone to pick them up from you and deliver them back to you when it is done, this can be arranged and indicated when you order.

What's Included:

  • I create an image backup of your hard drive on the destination Windows 7 machine, to the external hard drive that you provide, or I can purchase for you. This is so that if anything at all should go wrong during the transfer process, I can return your destination computer to exactly the way it was when I received it.
  • Perform a virus check on both of your computers (just to be safe). Anything indicated as a virus will be removed.
  • I will then transfer all* (please see below) of your software, documents, users and setting from your old machine to your new machine.
  • You will then receive a call and can either come and pick up your two computers, and the external hard drive and your copies of any utility software used in the transfer process. Or, if requested, all of this will be delivered to you.

How long will the actual transfer take?

There is no way of telling but, barring any unusual or unforeseen circumstances, your computers will be ready to be returned to you within 24 hrs.

Can I provide my own external hard drive?

Yes you can, provided the hard drive has been erased of any data or has nothing of value on it and is fully functional and has enough room to backup your computer.

Unless you already have an external hard drive, there is not much advantage to providing your own. I only charge $79 for this, as I just pass the cost of the drive on to you and you will see that this is the same discount price you would find at a Costco or Walmart.

Can you perform the work at my place instead of my bringing my computers to you.

No. I am ideally set up to work on multiple computers at the same time and is why I can offer such a low price to perform this service. Were I to come to you, I can only work on your computer and would have to charge you by the hour and therefore considerably more.

You would also not be happy watching your bill run up as I sat around twiddling my thumbs and sipping coffee waiting for lengthy processes like a virus check, backup, file copies and the transfer itself to complete.

Will all of my software run on the new machine?

While all of your software, documents, users and settings will be transferred over to your new machine and most of it will work, there is a high probability that some of them will not run or will require a manufacturer's upgrade or possibly an re-install to run correctly.

There are several considerations that factor into this. The most important of these are differences in the operating systems of the old and new machine, if the old machine is 32 bit and the new machine is 64 bit, if you intend to keep using the old machine and if you already have similar software like virus software already installed on your new machine.

Some examples:

Let us say your old machine is 32 bit and your new machine is 64 bit and you run Microsoft Office 2003 on your old machine. Microsoft Office 2003 will work on a 64 bit computer, but requires first that you do a reinstall of some of its components from the original installation CDs.

Another example would be that you intend to keep using your old machine and you have software that is only licensed to run on one machine. In this case, while the licensing information is physically transferred to your new machine, you would have to contact the manufacturer of the software about using the software on your new machine and not your old machine, or get it licensed for both machines.

Things like your virus protection software and third-party firewalls will probably require an upgrade. There may also be some old software or games that are not compatible with Windows 7 and is the reason I recommend, in the upgrade section of this site, Windows 7 Professional, so that you can download the Windows XP image for Windows 7 and run these exceptions under Windows XP.

Your new computer has Windows 7 Home Premium:

If your new computer has Window 7 Home Premium, this option of running Windows XP under Windows 7 is not available. In this case, you may want to consider Microsoft's Windows 7 "Anytime Upgrade" from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional. (Note: This upgrade is not included in my move to a new PC service).

Also, some applications with a copy protection scheme known as Digital Rights Management may not function correctly on your new machine until they are re-licensed. These include programs like iTunes, MusicMatch and Napster. These programs could require reactivation or possibly reinstallation from your original source. Microsoft Office may also require "reactivation" depending on the version.

As these are licensing issues, updating the licensing of applications that require it are not included in this service, as they are between you and the manufacturer and you will have to reactivate or update according to manufacturer's instructions, once you have received your computers back.

All of the actual application files, however, will be present for you to work with.
